The Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week -- Tuca & Bertie, Zac Efron as Sexy Ted Bundy

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of May 3-May 9.

If you were looking for a story about this week's Netflix releases being bland and boring, then get on out of here, because things are looking swell for a great weekend of huddling under the blanket while the internet uploads quality entertainment through your eyeballs! But then again there is a terrible game show called Flinch on the menu, too. Still, with Zac Efron as a serial killer who will charm the pants off you before he squeezes the life out of you and a new zany 'toon from the producers of BoJack Horseman, we'll get through this weekend.

The Biggest Releases

Tuca & Bertie, Season 1
Love the anthropomorphized animals of BoJack Horseman but hate the crippling depression of BoJack Horseman? Tuca & Bertie, created by BoJack animator Lisa Hanawalt and EP'd by BoJack creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, looks like it's set in the world of BoJack if the alcoholic, depressed horse popped a few too many uppers and chased it with a strong sativa. It's about two 30-something she-bird friends, voiced by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, and is wilder, lighter, and fluffier than BoJack because it cherishes the absurd and punny. Its strength is its delightful visuals, which teeter from hilariously hipster to Seussian surreality, and pop with more energy than BoJack. It might not have commentary on celebrity and mental health, but it's a deep and honest look at female friendship à la Broad City (Bird City?).

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
Even though Ted Bundy killed a lot of women in the 1970s, he still had much of the public giving him tasty gazes thanks to his good looks and ability to turn on the charm. I'm not saying that Zac Efron is a mass murderer -- I'm not saying he isn't either -- but in this biographical drama, he plays Bundy with the same chilling charisma. Reviews have been mixed, but critics are judging the film on its film-iness and not the real (and maybe only) reason to watch: to see if Efron can pull this off. Apparently, he can! (Trailer)

Everything Else

Lucifer, Season 4
The Fox show was exorcised to cancellation before Netflix surprisingly saved it, so we'll see if this was a good business decision or not. Actually we won't, because Netflix won't tell us how many people watch its shows. Anyhoo, Tom Ellis returns as THE DEVIL, who comes to Earth to solve crimes because this is a television show. Personally, I think if the Devil came to Earth he would probably become a Netflix executive. (JK Netflix, I love you, please don't cancel me.)

Dead to Me, Season 1
Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini star in the same dark comedy about two women in grief counseling? Sign me up! [Signs up. Watches a few episodes. Is very disappointed.] Oh well. (Trailer)

Flinch, Season 1
Netflix is getting into game shows, I guess. This Irish competition show puts contestants in odd contraptions that are loud and a tad scary, and if they flinch, they get punished. It is not even as exciting as that sounds. (Trailer)

All in My Family
Gay filmmaker Hao Wu documents the difficulties he had coming out to his very traditional Chinese parents in this moving short film. Netflix has a history of doing well in the documentary shorts category at the Oscars, and this could be the next success. (Trailer)

Alles ist Gud, Season 1
A sexual assault survivor tries to move on with her life but finds it difficult when the perpetrator re-enters her life. This is a serious German film. (Trailer)

Cupcake & Dino: General Services, Season 2
If a grown man came up to you and said they were watching a show about a talking cupcake and a dinosaur who take odd jobs around the city, you would point them to the nearest rehab facility. But when a kid tells you the same thing, it's adorable! Also be warned: If you watch the opening credits, you will never get the theme song out of your head. "Cupcake and Dino, Cupcake and Diii-I-iiino... general services." The only way to get it out of your head is via lobotomy. (Trailer)

Despite Everything
In this rom-com chica flick-a from Spain, four sisters are told via their mom's video will that their father isn't really their biological father, and they must find out who their real father is in order to get their inheritance! They smoke weed in a car, so I guess they're having a good time. Also, do video wills exist anywhere but in comedies? (Trailer)

Jo Pil-Ho: The Dawning Rage
Holy hell is that a dope movie title or what? It sounds like it would be the title of a Korean action movie about a corrupt cop who kicks the sh-- out of a bunch of losers! (Trailer)

The Last Summer
KJ Apa -- yes, THAT KJ Apa -- stars in this movie about four teen friends who spend the last summer after high school doing things we never did as kids, like stay out after 11 p.m., have meaningful relationships, and look optimistically at their future. And Tyler Posey plays the third baseman for the Chicago Cubs who dates a high schooler. Someone in the office watched this and said it was terrible, but find out for yourself! (Trailer)

True and the Rainbow Kingdom, Season 2
The thing about kids shows is that they usually feature some catchy, albeit excruciating, pop songs. This show -- about a girl and her cat who grant wishes in a technicolor fantasy land -- just has excruciating songs. I double dog dare you to watch the trailer. You'll be begging for "Baby Shark." Undercover
One of the world's largest dealers of ecstasy has some bad times when a couple of undercover cops infiltrate his inner circle. Luckily, he has plenty of ecstasy to put him in a better mood. (Trailer )

Abyss
In this Korean drama, two people come back to life as attractive people? I think that's the gist. Except the woman, who is undeniably hot, is sad that she isn't hot? She must have been Mercury hot before she died. Also, Netflix says only a new "episode" -- singular, not plural -- is coming on Monday. (Trailer / Monday, May 6)
