The heroic tale of real-life skier Jill Kinmont (played by Hassett), whose 1956 Olympic hopes were shattered when she took a paralyzing fall in Utah's Snow Cup race. The movie takes you through Hassett's depression over her fate, her break-up with her fiance who can't accept her paralysis, and her romance with Bridges and how he helps her fight back to go on to become a grammar school teacher in California. In the end Bridges, a daredevil pilot, is killed in a plane crash, and Hassett must accept his death. Sequel: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN PART TWO. The tune "Richard's Window" by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, was nominated for a Best Song Oscar.
