In 1966, seeking to capitalize on the popularity of the Fab Four (the Beatles), television executives dreamed up what wags labeled the "PreFab Four," but which the executives called the Monkees. The Monkees, the TV series, scored such a hit that the concocted TV characters began to actually tour as a band, achieving six Top Ten hits. Broadcast just once as a television special in 1969, this Rhino Video release features the Monkees performing with musical guests such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Fats Domino. Musical highlights include Micky Dolenz and Julie Driscoll's duet on "I'm a Believer," Peter Tork's "Prithee," Michael Nesmith's "Naked Persimmon," Davy Jones' "Goldilocks Sometime" and "I Go Ape"; and a rock & roll medley by the Monkees. The VHS version is remastered from the original.
