The Immortal Reviews

Reviewed By: Buzz McClain

Let's see, long-haired warrior from another century chases ageless, power-hungry supernatural villains through time so he can behead them. Where has this been seen before? This expanded pilot episode of a television show borrows heavily from The Highlander mythos, adding liberal doses of humor -- mostly in the form of easy one-liners and a truly bizarre scene involving the talking disembodied head of a car salesman -- in an effort to convey originality. Dark beyond comprehension, The Immortal looks like it was filmed with a flashlight for illumination, the better to achieve the low-budget special effects. The film only comes alive, and then barely, when the campy, icky villains are on the screen chewing up the scenery, making out while simultaneously doing something supernaturally villainous. Dominic Keating's evil laugh ("mmmuuuha-ha-ha-ha-ha") is right out of the 1940s bad guy handbook. Don't expect frequent amusement.
