Sherlock Gnomes will bore adult viewers with its garden-variety plot and utterly tepid sense of humor, and kids will be lucky if they get anything more than a few laughs out of the whole movie. That’s because the story itself isn’t quite simple enough to be easily enjoyed by young children: Parents in the audience of the screening that this critic attended had to explain scenes to their kids. The film also favors verbal gags and plot twists that just don’t work as well with young viewers; it really should’ve stuck with simple action and onscreen humor. There are far more entertaining movies that the little tykes can watch, and it’s doubtful that anything in Sherlock Gnomes will catch on with children like the Minions’ “banana” schtick did. Parents should save their entertainment budget for something better and instead just queue up the kids’ favorite DVD.
