Sarah and Son Reviews

Early drama starring Chatterton, who finds herself without a family after her shiftless husband sells their child to a rich couple, then leaves her. Though Chatterton begs Emery and Lloyd to give her child back, they slam the door in her face. Several years later, after Chatterton has established herself as an opera star, she once again makes a call for her son, this time meeting with success. March plays a lawyer and brother of the couple that bought the child; it is due to his change of heart and growing fondness for Chatterton that the child is returned to his rightful mother. Chatterton earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role, losing to Norma Shearer for THE DIVORCEE. The director, Dorothy Arzner, was the only commercial female director at the time; she did a creditable job, but it was the skill of Chatterton that gave the rather overly sentimental material the needed momentum.
