Livelier remake of the 1930 British comedy, this time starring Brook as the destitute Duke who cleverly cons rich American girl Lillie to agree to a month-long trial marriage to be spent in a Scottish castle. A better cast than the original helps immensely, and Lillie, who had clicked mightily on Broadway but was practically ignored by Hollywood, finally had an outing worthy of her talents, thanks to England. It is Lillie who makes ON APPROVAL richly amusing and sometimes uproarious, in spite of mediocre directing by Clive Brook.
