Beery plays the good-for-nothing father of a large family who accidentally finds $100,000 in buried loot and decides to act as if it were his own. He must become a hardworking, respectable citizen to explain his new wealth, since the whole town knows he has not worked a day in his life. Life takes a nasty turn when bank robbers snatch his fortune, but his boastful posturing while trying to explain the money's loss turns out to be in his favor when it leads to the crooks' capture.
