Night Creatures Reviews

Another costume thriller from England's Hammer studios has Cushing as a vicar in a small town where a smuggling trade has been exporting liquor. Cushing's religious garb masks his true identity as a famous pirate believed to have been hanged years earlier and now operating the smuggling ring. A group of sailors, headed by Allen, comes across ghostlike images and other mysterious illuminations in the swamps during their nighttime investigations. One of Allen's men, mulatto Reid, recognizes Cushing as the man who had tortured him and cut out his tongue. Allen is forced to arrest Cushing, bringing an end to the smuggling trade despite its benefits for the poor village. The picture's aura of mystery and the supernatural help to keep the suspense going. Cushing gives his usual effective performance as the mysterious vicar.
