Calhoun is the famous explorer who saves Tani, the daughter of Pilotto, the Grand Khan, from bandits. When Calhoun is jailed in Peking, Pilotto frees him. Calhoun helps repel rebels with a special cannon he builds using the gunpowder made by an old hermit, and then Tani offers her hand in marriage to him. He declines and continues his exploration of the Far East.
