Candy Reviews

A bombastic, pretentious adaptation of Terry Southern's satirical sex novel boiled down to a series of episodic guest shots by major movie stars. Aulin stars as the incredibly naive and innocent title character who is chased by alcoholic poet Burton, Mexican gardener Starr, right-wing general Matthau, bizarre guru Brando, hunchback Aznavour, and even her own father, Astin. Along the way she also encounters eccentric doctor Coburn, crazed hospital administrator Huston, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Rolling Stones groupie Pallenborg. Filmed on locations in Rome and New York, the movie never really captures the proper satirical angle of Southern's source material. Some of the music is provided by the Byrds and Steppenwolf. Highlights of the film are the opening and closing sequences provided by special effects expert Douglas Trumbull.
