The 1975 film "Dog Day Afternoon" was a re-creation of an actual bank robbery that took place in New York City in 1972. This absorbing and illuminating documentary recounts the whole bizarre affair, in which John Wojtowicz (who is interviewed here) decided to pull off the crime to finance a sex-change operation for his gay lover. The doc also includes comments by "Dog Day..." director Sidney Lumet and screenwriter Frank Pierson, who won an Oscar for his script.
