Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd Reviews

Disappointing Abbott and Costello programmer has the boys stranded on pirate-infested Tortuga Island, serving as waiters in an inn where they are given a love letter by Warren to be delivered to Shirley. They accidentally switch the letter for Captain Kidd's treasure map and are abducted by Laughton and female counterpart pirate Brooke and taken to Skull Island to seek Kidd's treasure. The voyage to the island and the romping about once there is tedious, with half-hearted routines from exhausted vaudeville material, not helped by a half-dozen instantly forgettable tunes. Why Laughton launched himself into such lowbrow comedy still puzzles critics. He accepted the role without reading the script and, once on the set, was thoroughly befuddled by Bud and Lou's adlibbing and their usual failure to provide the proper cues.
