How to Get Away with Murder: Did Laurel's Father Kidnap Her Baby?

The Castillo family is seriously messed up

We all expected to learn what happened to Laurel's (Karla Souza) baby in the How to Get Away with Murder midseason finale, but sadly, all we discovered is that the little guy did, in fact, take his first breaths. Everything after that... totally up in the air.

So what the heck really happened to this baby? Showrunner Pete Nowalk confirmed to TV Guide that it would be a little too optimistic to believe he's safe and sound in the NICU of the hospital when the show returns next week. Plus, the nurse said they found drugs in Laurel's system when they admitted her. Unless she was shooting up in the cab ride over to Annalise's (Viola Davis), there's still a missing piece of this puzzle.

Now, with only a handful of episodes left in Season 4, we've got a kind of crazy theory about what really went down in the hours between Annalise finding Laurel in labor and when she woke up in the hospital later: Is it possible that Laurel's baby has actually been with her evil dad all along?

How to Get Away with MurderBoss Talks About That Baby Twist

For the most part, Jorge Castillo (Esai Morales) has felt like the other shoe waiting to drop on this season of How to Get Away with Murder. We know he killed Wes (Alfred Enoch) -- most likely to protect his company's reputation before it went public -- and his lackey Dominic (Nicholas Gonzalez) has been lurking around town ever since. Other than that, though, he's remained mostly off-screen while the surviving members of the Keating Five worked to find dirt on his company to take him down.

Unfortunately, Dominic overhead Connor (Jack Falahee) talking about that whole sordid night, so the jig is kind of up.

If Jorge is finally aware of Laurel's agenda to get revenge by bringing down his company, he could take drastic measures to discredit her in the hopes that any evidence she later presents against him would be easily dismissed. Nowalk did say that Jorge will take a "surprising action" in the first episode back.

Shooting her up with illegal (but not ultimately life-threatening) drugs would certain be surprising, and it would provide him with a perfect opportunity to have her declared an unfit mother and take legal custody of his grandchild. That way, when she undoubtedly tries to take him down again, whatever evidence she presents, no matter how damning, could easily be seen as the desperate attempts of a drug addicted mother to regain custody of her newborn child.

It's a rather elaborate theory, sure, but when has anything on How to Get Away with Murder ever been simple?

How to Get Away with Murder returns Thursday, Jan. 18 at 10/9c on ABC.
