Charlie Hunnam Really Regrets Leaving Fifty Shades for Some Reason

The actor bawled his eyes out over not being able to play Christian

When Charlie Hunnam backed out of starring in Fifty Shades of Grey, many thought it was a smart career move for him to avoid association with the mom porn franchise. But not Hunnam. The Sons of Anarchyactor was apparently so devastated over not being able to play Christian Grey that he bawled his eyes out.

"It was the worst professional experience of my life," Hunnam told V Man, as reported by People."It was the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing that I've ever had to deal with professionally. It was heartbreaking."

Despite wanting to take on the role of the dom billionaire, which ultimately went to Jamie Dornan, Hunnam had scheduling conflicts. By the time he was offered the role, Hunnam had already committed to Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak.

"I'd given Guillermo my word, over a year before, that I was going to do this film," he said. "People were saying, 'Are you crazy? Guillermo still has got four months to recast, it's the fourth lead, you can go and do this [instead].' I said, 'I can't. He's my friend.'"

Hunnam said he prides himself on keeping his word, but that it hurt him to telll Fifty Shades director Sam Taylor-Johnson he wouldn't be able to play Christian. "I called her and we both cried our eyes out on the phone for 20 minutes," Hunnam said. "I needed to tell her that this was not going to work."
