The first trailer for the final season of The Affair is here, and there's more angst than ever before.
While The Affair is best known for playing with perspectives within the show's narrative, the final season looks like it will also play with time as Anna Paquin steps in to play an adult Joanie at an unknown time in the future. The brief clip shows Joanie struggling to ensure she doesn't grow into her mother, but that existential dread is making her more like Alison (Ruth Wilson) than she realizes. What's more troubling is that Joanie doesn't seem to interact with anyone from her mother's past in her grown-up life, including her father Cole (Joshua Jackson, who won't be returning for Season 5).
Back in the present timeline, Noah (Dominic West) is struggling to redeem himself once and for all, but it seems the harder he tries to be the man he hopes he was, the faster things fall apart around him. Meanwhile, Helen (Maura Tierney) is still struggling with her addiction to her ex and whether she can ever be truly happy without him, or some version of him.
Is there any potential for a happy ending for a member of the Solloway family?
The Affair Season 5 premieres Sunday, Aug. 25 at 9/8c on Showtime.
