Television Academy, CBS Drop Time-Shifting Plan for Emmys

The Television Academy has scrapped its much-maligned plan to time-shift several awards at next month's Emmy Awards.
"This decision was made to mend relationships within the television community and to allow executive producer Don Mischer to focus his full attention on producing the creative elements in the telecast," Academy Chairman-CEO John Shaffner said in a statement. "Our goal is to celebrate the year in television, honor excellence and this year's great achievements with the support of our industry colleagues and our telecast partner, CBS."

The TV Academy was heavily criticized by numerous writers and showrunners after announcing it would pre-record eight of the 28 awards in an effort to save time. The plan was to reinsert edited versions of the pre-taped presentations throughout the actual live, prime-time Emmys ceremony.

Mischer had said that plan was "to reshape the Emmys a little bit."

The eight categories that were going to be "cut" were miniseries, made for television movie, TV movie/miniseries supporting actor and actress, TV movie/miniseries directing, TV movie/miniseries writing, drama series writing, and variety directing.TVGuide.com's calls to the Academy for comment on Wednesday were not returned.The 61st Primetime Emmys, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, airs Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8/7c on CBS.
