The Australian swimmer, who won five Olympic gold medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics, recently contracted the infections after undergoing multiple surgeries on his shoulder. Thorpe, 31, is currently in the intensive care unit at a Sydney-area hospital.

Thorpe's agent says it's highly unlikely that Thorpe will ever swim competitively again.
