LeVar Burton has launched a Kickstarter campaign to make Reading Rainbow a web series.

"Ever since Reading Rainbow began in 1983, I have dedicated myself to fostering a love of reading in children, just as my mother did for me," Burton writes on the website. "Over the past year, I have watched Kickstarter bring communities together to support artists and inventors. Again and again, I have been inspired by watching like-minded people team up to accomplish impossible dreams, and to change the world. Now, I am hoping you will join me on my mission: to bring Reading Rainbow back for every child, everywhere."

The PBS series ran from 1983 until it  was canceled in 2006, but continued to air reruns until 2009. In 2012, Burton

announced he was creating a mobile application through his site RRKidz. At the time, Burton said the app was just the first step in a long-term plan that would include DVDs and streaming of classic episodes. Recognizing that not every child has a tablet, Burton hopes the website will bring his program to anyone with Internet access. As of this publishing, more than 9,000 people have become backers of the Kickstarter campaign, pledging just under $450,000. Burton has 35 days to reach his goal of $1,000,000.
