J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele Will Donate Their TV Salaries to Fight Georgia Abortion Bill

J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele have joined the chorus of Hollywood voices speaking out against Georgia's highly controversial anti-abortion bill, which was signed into law earlier this week.

The high-profile writers/directors/producers, whose forthcoming HBO TV series Lovecraft Country will soon begin filming in the state, will not pull production out of Atlanta, but they have pledged considerable donations to organizations fighting the law. Calling the legislation "an attack aimed squarely and purposefully at women," Abrams and Peele said in a statement to Deadline that they will donate "100% of [their] respective episodic fees for this season" to the ACLU and Fair Fight Georgia, a local organization that encourages voter education and turnout at the polls.

Their full statement reads: "In a few weeks we start shooting our new show, Lovecraft Country and will do so standing shoulder to shoulder with the women of Georgia. Governor Kemp's 'Fetal Heartbeat' Abortion Law is an unconstitutional effort to further restrict women and their health providers from making private medical decisions on their terms. Make no mistake, this is an attack aimed squarely and purposely at women. We stand with Stacey Abrams and the hardworking people of Georgia, and will donate 100% of our respective episodic fees for this season to two organizations leading the charge against this draconian law: the ACLU of Georgia and Fair Fight Georgia. We encourage those who are able to funnel any and all resources to these organizations."

Atlanta is a huge movie and TV industry hub thanks to production tax credits, and Abrams and Peele are the latest in a growing list of celebrities who are opposing the so-called heartbeat bill, which bans abortions after six weeks except if the mother's health is at great risk. Several production companies are already saying that they're going to boycott filming in the state for the time being. Alyssa Milano, who is currently shooting Season 2 of Insatiable, released her own statement explaining that she was going to try to get as many productions to move out of the state as possible. Showrunner Julie Plec has also pledged to match donations for those contributing to Reclaim Georgia, an organization working to unseat anti-abortion rights legislators.
