Kershner was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and trained as a musician and photographer before he began directing feature films.
In addition to helming the Star Warssequel, Kershner directed Sean Connery as James Bond in Never Say Never Again in 1983 and Peter Weller in Robocop 2in 1990.
