Game of Thrones Has Now Won Best Drama Emmys for All Its Worst Seasons

Stars packed the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday. Hosted by Saturday Night Live's Michael Che and Colin Jost, the ceremony featured plenty of snubs and surprises and so no one knew quite what to expect when it came time to announce the winner of Outstanding Drama Series, which eventually went to Game of Thrones.

It was a tight race and the stakes were high, with this year marking The Americans' last shot at the coveted statuette -- the Russian spy series wrapped its final episodes in May. It went up against Netflix's critically-acclaimed drama The Crown and sci-fi megahit Stranger Things, in addition to HBO's Westworld, NBC's tear-jerker This Is Us and Hulu's dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tale.

In the end, Game of Thrones took back its title for its shortened, penultimate season, meaning the HBO show has officially won Outstanding Drama Series for all of its worst seasons. (It previously took home the award in 2015 and 2016, for Seasons 5 and 6). It's undeniable that Game of Thrones is an epic, visually stimulating and superbly written series as a whole, and it's incredibly deserving of all its accolades. We just can't help mentioning that its earlier seasons were far superior to the later ones. Can't we just retroactively give Season 3 an Emmy and be done here? Ugh, I guess then we'd have to take way an Emmy from Breaking Bad. This is so hard.

Game of Thrones went into Monday's ceremony with a whopping 45 Emmys. The series walked away from the night with 47 Emmys after Peter Dinklage took home his third Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. It now has more Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series than Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. That's the world we live in.

Game of Thrones will return in 2019 on HBO.
