Juju Chang is out as the newsreader for ABC's Good Morning America.

Chang has been reassigned to a full-time role as a special correspondent and fill-in anchor at Nightline. Josh Elliott, currently a co-anchor for the morning edition of ESPN's SportsCenter, will fill her role at the GMA news desk. A formal announcement is expected in the next few days, according to an ABC News insider.

Chang's departure from GMA is the first on-air shift under ABC News president Ben Sherwood, who took over the leadership reins of the news division late last year. Chang is respected and well liked within ABC News where she has worked on various programs over the past 23 years. But Sherwood had made it clear to the rank and file that he's scrutinizing every position in front of and behind the camera and is ready to make changes, especially at Good Morning America where any competitive ratings gain against NBC's Today Show can mean millions of dollars in ad revenue.

Elliott joined SportsCenter in 2008 when ESPN expanded live telecasts of the highlights show to the morning hours. He has apparently impressed his bosses with his fill-in work at GMA.

Chang joined GMA 15 months ago when George Stephanopoulos took over as co-anchor. In a memo to staffers, Sherwood said Chang will also be contributing long-form pieces to the 13 prime-time editions of Nightline set to air on ABC this summer. "She will contribute even more of the in-depth and insightful journalism that has always been her hallmark," Sherwood said.
