Insidious: Chapter 2 frightened off the competition at the box office this weekend, taking the No. 1 spot with $41 million in ticket sales. The sequel earned three times as much as the original movie in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. It's the second-highest September opening, behind last year's Hotel Transylvania. The Robert De Niro/Michelle Pfeiffer mob comedy The Family opened in second place with $14.5 million.

Riddick dropped from the top spot to No. 3 with $7 million, while The Butler fell to No. 4 with $5.9 million. In fifth place was We're the Millers with $5.4 million.
At No. 6 was Instructions Not Included, which took in $4.25 million, while Planes came in seventh, earning $3 million in its sixth week in theaters.
Rounding out the Top 10 were One Direction: This Is Us ($2.4 million), Elysium ($2 million) and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters ($1.8 million).
