Chatterton finds herself wedged between marriage to the adulterous Cavanagh and responsibility to her social class. She is expected to ignore her husband's activities, as a divorce would cause a scandal, especially since he is carrying on with the wife of Chatterton's brother, Cook. She decides to indulge herself and takes off to Switzerland, where she gets involved with Lukas. In the finale, Cavanagh and his mistress (Compton) are involved in a car crash that kills the adulterous husband. Chatterton destroys her own reputation by explaining that Cavanagh and Compton were together only in an attempt to prevent a rendezvous between her and Lukas. Since she has broken the rules of the upper class' game, Chatterton is now free to marry Lukas, whom she has loved all along.
