Vitagraph star Corinne Griffith emotes through a series of painful experiences in this drama. Criminologist George Winton (Charles Kent) assures his wife, Alice (Griffith), that no matter what, a crook will always be a crook. This bit of advice apparently refers to her brother, Ned (Jack McLean), who once stole from his employer, Benjamin Graves (L. Rogers Lytton). Graves, however, isn't the most honest character himself -- he is manipulating the value of a mining stock. Alice's whole fortune is in this particular stock and she pledges it to Graves so that he will not bring charges against Ned. Graves ruins the mining firm, and Alice and Winton work with the district attorney to prove his wrongdoing. Graves is aware of this and forges love letters from Alice in attempt to get her to stop the proceedings. She decides to steal the forged letters from him. Ned, meanwhile, steals again -- proving Winton's point -- and is arrested. He finds out about Alice's troubles with Graves and resolves to help her. Alice, afraid that he will commit murder, goes to Graves' house. When she gets there, she finds Graves already dead. A policeman finds her there but it turns out that the killer is Graves' mistress, who has taken poison. She lives long enough to confess and Alice is released.
