One of the least interesting of Chevalier's pictures, THE WAY TO LOVE originally co-starred Sylvia Sidney (who left after two-and-a-half weeks, claiming sickness), was foisted on Carole Lombard (who read the script and vehemently declined), and ended up with Dvorak. She plays a carnival knife thrower's target who falls in love with Chevalier, an aspiring tour guide in Paris, who makes his money by traipsing up and down the boulevard wearing an advertisement: "Is Your Heart Happy? No? Consult Professor Bibi, 17 Rue Canton." After fighting off the professor's maritally inclined niece, Westman, Chevalier ends up with Dvorak in his arms. Chevalier, after this picture, was lured to MGM by Irving Thalberg, leaving the troubled Paramount in the lurch like so many of the studio's other stars. About to drift into bankruptcy, the studio was saved only by the enormous success of Mae West's SHE DONE HIM WRONG. A French-language version of THE WAY TO LOVE was shot simultaneously, with Chevalier also in the lead, but with virtually all the other actors replaced. Titled L'AMOUR GUIDE, this Hollywood-made picture played in French-speaking lands.
