The Great Victor Herbert Reviews

Biographical account of the great turn-of-the-century composer of musicals and operettas, Victor Herbert, takes a back seat to the plot revolving around the marriage of tenor Jones and soprano Martin. Not much insight is given into the life of Herbert, played by Connolly, with most of the story spent on the tangled affairs of the actors who staged his works. Connolly is the peacemaker between Jones and Martin when they have domestic clashes due to the opposite direction of their careers. Martin made her movie debut in this film. The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Score. A total of 28 Herbert songs are heard during the course of the film, including "Someday" (lyrics by William LeBaron), "Al Fresco," "Thine Alone," "Punchinello," "Kiss Me Again," "All For You," "Neapolitan Love Song" (lyrics by Henry Blossom), "Absinthe Frappe," "Rose Of The World," "March Of The Toys" (lyrics by Glen Macdonough), "There Once Was An Owl," "To The Land Of Romance," "Sweethearts" (lyrics by Henry B. Smith), "Ah, Sweet Mystery Of Life," "I'm Falling In Love With Someone" (lyrics by Rida Johnson Young).
