This 1923 production was the second film version of that old reliable David Belasco stage piece The Girl of the Golden West. This time the saloon-keeper heroine is played by Sylvia Breamer, while her swashbuckling bandit lover is portrayed by J. Warren Kerrigan. The plot adheres closely to the original, culminating in the famous poker game scene, wherein the stakes are the bandit's life and the barmaid's virtue. Not quite as inventively directed as the 1915 Cecil B. DeMille version of the same play, the 1923 film has the virtue of excellent cinematography, courtesy of Sol Polito. Girl of the Golden West would be remade two more times, in 1930 and 1937.
