Based on the true adventures of 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham (Bottoms), this film follows the youngster as he sails solo around the world in a 23-foot sloop. The trip, which takes five years, brings the character to maturity and manhood. On the way he falls in love with a young woman, played by Raffin, who is his constant inspiration and follows him to Fiji, Australia, South Africa, Panama, and the Galapagos Islands. The triumphal conclusion of the trip marks the young man as the youngest person every to sail around the world alone. Nykvist's cinematography of the gorgeous locations is nothing less than stunning.
