Drunk conventioneer North is driving home up the California coast when he picks up hitchhiker Tierney, who has just robbed and killed a theater manager. Soon North also picks up two young lady hitchhikers (Leslie and Lawford). Tierney is spotted by a gas station attendant and a police dragnet closes in. They hide out in a beach house, where Leslie is killed while trying to flee for help. Finally, the police arrive and Tierney is captured. Standard crime melodrama helped greatly by Tierney's swaggering, menacing performance.
