THE BAT WHISPERS was apparently the first movie to use the now-hoary device of appealing to the audience at the end of film to keep mum about the ending. Morris unravels the mystery of The Bat's identity (it's based on the play by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood). To reveal a plot such as this would be to do a disservice to a potential viewer so merely be aware that nothing is what it seems. Tucker (Bell) is not well-remembered, despite having appeared in hundreds of films and having begun his career at the dawn of film's creation with the Edison Company in 1913. Morris is but one of many "brother acts" in show business; his brother, Adrian, played a carpetbagger in GONE WITH THE WIND. Director West also directed the 1926 silent version of this classic mystery; the sets are top-notch, presenting the proper eerie atmosphere.
