Psychiatrist Larry Livingston (Jeff Bridges) and his television actress wife, Jo (Farrah Fawcett) have a rocky marriage and two children, and eventually divorce. Beth Goodwin (Alice Krige), a potential world-class photographer, devoted wife of concert pianist Peter Goodwin (David Dukes), and the mother of his two children, is widowed when her husband dies prematurely. Larry is reluctantly coaxed by his friends to date, and meets Beth. The two are mutually attracted, and after a time they marry. But they find they still have to overcome the demons of their marital pasts, including dealing with their children and step-children. For all its sensitivity to the real problems of transplanted partnerships and the pressures they put on the partners' children, SEE YOU IN THE MORNING does little more than rehash material that television has been trafficking in for years (admittedly, mostly through sophomoric sitcoms), and in this semi-autobiographical treatment producer-director-writer Alan Pakula fails to deepen our understanding of the tangled relationships that result when families break up to re-form in new units. The cast performs earnestly and well as an ensemble, and Pakula has provided the principals with some rich little scenes to shine individually as well. But the film as a whole is talky and plodding.
