Scarlet River Reviews

An interesting western, of sorts, which stars Keene as an actor in a western directed by Kennedy. The film's production takes them to the Scarlet River Ranch, where Wilson is trying to keep her malevolent foreman, Chaney, from taking over her property. Keene steps off the set to prove that he's just as brave off the screen as on. The opening sequence has Keene strolling through the RKO commissary and meeting such notables as Loy, Hudson, McCrea, Haydon, and Cabot--all of whom play themselves and just happened to be on the set at the time of shooting. One of the more exciting moments of this early B Western is the appearance of stuntman Yakima Canutt doing the same stunt which would amaze viewers several years later in John Ford's STAGECOACH. With the stage traveling at high speed, Canutt fell off the horse team so that the wagon rolled over him, then he grabbed hold of the back of the wagon.
