Salt and Pepper Reviews

A black man (Davis) named Salt and his white partner (Lawford) named Pepper own a Soho nightclub. When a man and woman are murdered at the club, the partners are pointed to as the killers by an anonymous source. They finally are released and find themselves caught up in the middle of some intrigue. The dead woman was a British secret service agent. Davis and Lawford find her diary with the names of four men marked for murder. They turn amatuer sleuths to try to solve the crimes, but three men are murdered. The trail leads to Le Messurier, a madman who wants to overthrow the English government using nuclear blackmail. Davis and Lawford can't get anyone to believe them, but eventually they stop the plan with the appropriate amount of hijinks and dangerous situations. After stopping the bad guys with an ancient army tank, the pair are heroes and go to Buckingham Palace to be knighted by the Queen. SALT & PEPPER suffers from a lack of imagination, using broad comedy and overindulgent slapstick as a substitute for plot development and humor. The result is a mostly unfunny, uncreative film that does little but provide a vehicle for its two stars. This movie had a sequel, ONE MORE TIME.
