First filmed in 1909 (!), Leo Tolstoy's novel Resurrection would be made and remade countless times over the next eighty years. The 1918 version starred Pauline Frederick as the unfortunate Katusha, whose reckless affair with Prince Nakulov (Robert Elliot) brings disaster to both parties. Cast off by the callous Nakulov, Katusha becomes a prostitute, ending up in prison. Here she is visited by the Prince, who somewhat hypocritically suggests that she forsake Sin in favor of Religion. But only when the Prince himself is shamed and humiliated is Katusha purged of her own misdeeds. At the time of its release, Resurrection was compared unfavorably to an earlier stage version starring Blanche Walsh.
