Oliver's Story Reviews

More unbearable maudlin sentiment from Erich Segal. This sequel to the inexplicably successful 1970 tearjerker LOVE STORY begins as Ali McGraw's casket is being lowered into the grave. A distraught O'Neal attempts to go on with his life, working as a busy lawyer in a prestigious firm, while still spewing his mawkish 1960s liberal sentiments, with an overdose of self-pity that continually frustrates his close friends. Then one fine day he meets the beautiful heir to the Bonwit Teller fortune, Bergen. In a distinct contrast to the original film, we now have a case of rich-loves-rich. From there it's the usual Segal nonsense, highlighted by Milland's reprise of his role as O'Neal's father. Eventually O'Neal loses Bergen when she walks out after having heard enough of his banal whimpering.
