Mystery Submarine Reviews

Insipid plot features Douglas as the commander of a renegade submarine. He tricks Toren into believing her husband is alive (though he was killed in the war). This way he can use her to get famed German scientist Donath for an unnamed foreign power. Carey is the hero who rescues Donath and Toren, then destroys the sub. This was Sirk's first directorial effort for Universal but shows none of the director's talent. The script is simplistic, with stereotyped characters and stock situations, and the direction is flat and uninspired. This embarrassing feature was Sirk's first for Universal under a seven-year contract, and one of which he says, "I remember nothing about many of the early Universal pictures, and, anyway, they are best forgotten."
