Carroll is a businesswoman determined not to have a man interfere with her career. Enter MacMurray--determined, with a will as strong as Carroll's, to penetrate her icy exterior. They make the rounds together, but she gets cold feet and runs off to Nassau. He returns to his home in Bali, presumably to marry his boss' daughter. Carroll arrives in Bali, but discovers MacMurray's plans and heads back to New York. But MacMurray is stuck on Carroll, and follows her back to the Big Apple. Naturally, they are married at the film's end. It's a cute little comedy, though the title has nothing to do with the film. The direction merrily takes the story on its frenzied pace without getting the least bit ahead or behind. Jones sings an operatic piece in his role as Carroll's other man, a star at the Met. Tamiroff is the funniest thing going as a simple window washer giving Carroll advice about clothing, men, and life. This film was Massen's American cinematic debut after two features in Denmark. She appeared to specialize in honeymooning; her second American feature was HONEYMOON FOR THREE. The working title of HONEYMOON IN BALI was the rather more descriptive ARE HUSBANDS NECESSARY?, but Paramount executives decided that the working press would have too much fun with the latter, since Carroll was in the midst of a messy divorce at the time of release, so they changed the name. Times also change; at a later date, any studio public relations man worth his salt would have given his left eyetooth to be able to exploit the innuendo inherent in the original title.
