Angela Davis and Yuri Kochiyama are two veteran activists who found their voices during the tumult of the 1960s: Davis was an outspoken socialist affiliated with the Black Panther Party and became a respected philosopher and theorist on politics and feminism, while Kochiyama is a Japanese-American who spent part of her 20s in an internment camp during World War II and later moved to New York City, where she was an associate of Malcolm X (she was by his side as he was assassinated) and became a respected community organizer. Filmmakers C. A. Griffith and H. L. T. Quan explore the past and present of these remarkable women in the documentary Mountains That Take Wing: Angela Davis and Yuri Kochiyama -- A Conversation On Life, Struggles and Liberation. The film illustrates their work in the 1960s and 70s through newsreel footage and photographs, while a joint interview with Davis and Kochiyama gives them an opportunity to put their actions into perspective while examining the issues of the present day. Mountains That Take Wing was an official selection at the 2010 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.
