Laughing Boy Reviews

An unintentionally funny film, and perhaps director Van Dyke's weakest picture. The film stars Novarro and Velez as a Native American couple, though their Mexican accents and inappropriate acting make them wildly implausible in their roles. The story, which was cut in a few spots by 1934 censors, concerns Velez as an Indian maiden who wishes to live as the white folks do. She marries Novarro but has an affair with a white man. Novarro discovers Velez in the arms of the white and shoots an arrow at him. He hits Velez by accident and she dies in front of the two men she loves. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of 1929.
