A gripping mystery from Clouzot, the French master of suspense, his second feature. A pair of unhappy lovers, Blier and Delair, unwittingly get involved in the murder of a sleazy film producer. Delair pays a visit to his house hoping to find work, but when he makes advances she hits him on the head with a champagne bottle. Meanwhile, Blier has rushed into the house with the intention of doing the producer in, but finds that he's too late. When the police investigate, Blier is suspected. However, his alibi is proven valid when Delair confesses. It turns out that neither is guilty when an underworld mobster is charged with the crime. While the story is thin, Clouzot uses his immense skills to raise the picture above the standard for the genre. (In French; English subtitles.)
