Inside Straight Reviews

McCambridge owns a bank in 1870 San Francisco. A run on the bank is threatened and rich man Brian is called to help stem the spread of panic throughout the town. He and McCambridge meet in her home to play cards, with the bank as the stakes. During the game, Brian tells his life story to her. His story shows him as a ruthless man more interested in money than people. Dahl is his first wife, who cheats him out of some money and runs off. Raymond, his second wife, dies in childbirth. The film ends with Brian leaving McCambridge's home without revealing his hand to her or to the audience. Brian turns in a fine performance despite the overwritten script and lagging direction. McCambridge puts in a solid performance and absolutely seethes in her hatred for Brian.
