Dix is a convict at a brutal prison camp in a southern state. The prisoners build a new road and are pushed relentlessly. Men are whipped, kept in sweatboxes, and live in unsanitary conditions. Dix plans his escape when his brother is sent to the camp, and ends up sacrificing his life to prevent his sibling from being killed. Released shortly before Warner Bros.' I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, this one established many of the situations and personalities used in later, similar films, including implied inmate homosexuality.
