According to research estimates, sleep disorders regularly impact a whopping thirty-six million Americans. Many are substantially sleep deprived - the product of going to bed too late and/or getting up too early to accommodate busy schedules - while others suffer from a condition known as sleep apnea that regularly disturbs the ebb and flow of sleep by causing the victim to stop breathing hundreds of times per night. In the PBS documentary Good Night with Sleep Doctor Michael Breus Ph.D, physician Breus (one of the world's leading experts on sleep) discusses the ways in which job activity, environment, dietary habits and genetics can directly and negatively impact one's ability to sleep well and thus function well during the day. Breus then discusses the myriad of ways in which individuals can modify their sleeping patterns to dramatically improve many aspects of their lives. The program is divided, thematically and topically, into three segments: Understanding Sleep and Sleep Disorders, in which Breus expostulates on the scientific nature of sleep and the origin of various related dysfunctions; "You Are What You Sleep," in which Breus teaches viewers how to make simple lifestyle modifications to improve sleep patterns; and "Sleep Myths," in which Breus discusses the most common misperceptions about sleep per se.
