Biographical film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of nonviolent non-cooperative Indian independence movement against the British Raj during the 20th century. In 1893, Mohandas K. Gandhi is thrown off a South African train for being an Indian and traveling in a first class compartment. He decides to start a non-violent protest campaign for the rights of all Indians in South Africa arguing that Indians are British subjects and entitled to the same rights and privileges. Later he is invited to India, where he is considered a national hero. He is urged to take up the fight for India's independence from the British Empire.
