Gal Young Un Reviews

A virtual one-man project for Victor Nunez, a young American independent filmmaker, who did everything except compose the music and act. Set in the backwoods of Florida, GAL YOUNG UN is an insightful, sensitive depiction of a woman who has retired from the world to work on her property and seek contentment through her ability to be by herself and take pleasure in her surroundings. An upsetting force in the form of a shiftless young man pops into her life; he romances the woman many years his senior and asks her to marry him. Though the woman has a decidedly positive effect on the young man, he soon begins to use her to help set up a moonshining business (the story takes place during Prohibition). Though the woman is taken advantage of, she deals with the proceedings in a patient and understanding manner that always allows her to stay on top of the situation. A moving and subtle film that manages to retain its power without lapsing into sentiment, taken from a story by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
