This was the first in a series of amusing comedies starring featuring a talking mule (voiced by Chill Wills) named Francis. Donald O'Connor is Peter Stirling, a dim-witted GI who, while stationed in Burma, hooks up with Francis. With the mule's, Peter performs a series of heroic deeds. Peter insists on telling others that the mule talks to him, though Francis stubbornly refuses to communicate with anyone else. Peter's commanding officer thinks he's nuts, of course, and keeps sending the poor sap to the psycho ward. These goofy comedies made more money than anyone expected and director Lubin went on to create another successful talking equine for television in "Mr. Ed."
