An American president and his family seem a likely satirical target for the acerbic wit of Buck Henry--scripter of CATCH-22, coscripter of THE GRADUATE--yet Henry's directorial debut is a resounding failure. Bob Newhart is President Manfred Link, and Gilda Radner is Gloria, the First Daughter. When Gloria is kidnaped in Africa by a tribe bent on sacrificing her, Daddy comes up with an offer the tribesmen can't refuse. Filled with illogical situations and juvenile humor, FIRST FAMILY will have trouble getting anybody's vote.
