Dancing Pirate Reviews

The novelty of this early Technicolor film attracted audiences, but the plot, acting, and songs no doubt disappointed the patrons. The story concerns a Boston dance teacher, Collins, who gets shanghaied by pirates. While on the voyage from Boston to Los Angeles by way of Cape Horn, Collins jumps ship in Mexico, meets the local mayor, Morgan, and wins the heart of Morgan's daughter. Even songs by Rodgers and Hart are of little help to this film, which appears only to be interested in exploiting the then-new technology of Technicolor by parading every color under the rainbow in front of the camera. The Royal Cansinos featured in one of the sequences was Rita Hayworth's family, Spanish-born dancer Eduardo Cansino and his Ziegfeld Follies partner Volga Haworth. Songs: "Are You My Love?" "When You're Dancing the Waltz" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart). Russell Lewis earned an Oscar nomination for his choreography.
